Markou Montague Levine Defense Managing Partner Sarissa Montague spoke with WWMT News Channel 3 regarding newly-revealed documents of former University of Michigan Head Football Coach Sherrone Moore.
Documents obtained by WWMT through a Freedom of Information Act request shows Moore is accused of violating at least three clauses in his contract. According to the termination letter, Moore’s conduct offended public decency or morality, and he engaged in a supervisor-employee relationship — which is against university policy. Moore is also accused of lying during the investigation.
In her interview with WWMT, Montague noted that while Moore’s case is receiving significant attention, it is not much different from other cases that occur every day.
“If there were any discipline issues or anything untoward that was going on, there should be documentation of that in the file,” she told WWMT. “And in this case, there was absolutely nothing in the file.”
As part of a Freedom of Information Act request, News Channel 3 received more than 80 pages of documents related to Moore’s employment, some of which were redacted to protect his personal information. The only disciplinary action recorded in Moore’s personnel file was his termination letter.
University officials conducted a “thorough investigation” after receiving “hotline reports” regarding Moore’s conduct, according to documents. The investigation determined that Moore’s actions could harm the university’s reputation, leading to his dismissal.
Montague, who’s not connected to this case, believes much more information will eventually come out.
“This could take some time, and this is one more step in the process,” she told WWMT.
The request for documents and emails related to the university’s investigation was denied due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
“My expectation is that the University of Michigan is cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation regarding this matter,” Montague said. “For that reason, they would keep it, they wouldn’t release it at this point, although at some point in the future, we can expect that it most likely will be released.”
The next court hearing in Moore’s criminal case is set for Thursday, Jan. 22.
