KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Dec. 16, 2016 - Sarissa Montague, an attorney at Kalamazoo-based law firm Levine &Levine, was honored on Thursday, December 1, as one of thirty Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s 2016 Up & Coming Lawyers. Sariss K Montague The recipients were selected by a committee based on who have established a name for themselves, go above and beyond, and display the ambition, drive, determination and accomplishments that set them apart among their peers in their first 10 years in practice.

Montague was admitted to the bar in 2007 and began working at Levine & Levine in 2008. She is an active member of Kalamazoo’s legal and business communities and belongs to the Kalamazoo County Bar Association, Michigan Bar Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Montague also belongs to the Kalamazoo Women’s Bureau advising women to achieve success in their career and professional goals. Additionally, Montague is an advocate for the development of a Veterans Treatment Court in Kalamazoo to handle criminal cases involving military veterans. Montague attended Union College for her undergraduate degree and Michigan State College of Law for her J.D.

After nearly five years or working on behalf of her client, earlier this year Montague successfully won the client’s release from prison, which forced a change to the Michigan Department of Correction’s policy regarding parole board jurisdiction for habitual offenders who have earned disciplinary credits. As a result of this ruling, the MDOC has issued a new policy stating the Michigan Parole Board must consider a habitual offender who earned disciplinary credits for parole without first receiving permission from his sentencing judge or successor.

"Montague excels in the roles of fearless litigator, zealous advocate, and empathetic counselor," said Levine & Levine Managing Partner Randall Levine. "With realism and creativity, she has developed a reputation among peers and prosecutors for being trustworthy, ethical, and hardworking and deserves the recognition of being one of Michigan’s up and coming lawyers."
